Tarot coaching is not the same as a one-time tarot reading.
A reading can bring clarity, reflection, validation or insight around a specific question or situation. Tarot coaching goes deeper. It combines the intuitive mirror of tarot with the structure, support & accountability of coaching.
That means you are not only receiving insight.
You are working with it.
You are reflecting, practicing, integrating, asking questions, noticing patterns, making choices & applying what you learn to your real life.
This is why tarot coaching can be so powerful.
It is also why your participation matters.
A tarot coach can hold space, ask powerful questions, interpret the cards, offer reflection, guide the process & support your transformation. But they cannot do the work for you.
You are not a passive witness in tarot coaching.
You are an active participant in your own becoming.
Here’s how to get the most out of the process.
Before Your Tarot Coaching Begins
Before your first session, it helps to know what you bring to the work.
You do not need to have all the answers. You do not need perfect language. You do not need to understand the whole pattern before you begin.
But it helps to have a sense of:
- what issue or area of life you want to address
- what you hope to receive from tarot coaching
- what kind of tarot coaching style feels right for you
- what philosophy or approach you want from a tarot coach
- what intentions or goals you want to work toward
- whether the tarot coach you’ve chosen feels ethical, effective & aligned
- what your intuition says about the fit
Tarot coaching works best when your focus is clear enough to give the work direction, but open enough to allow insight, surprise & deeper truth to emerge.
You might begin with something like:
- “I want to understand why I keep abandoning my needs.”
- “I want to change my relationship with my chronic illness.”
- “I want to strengthen my intuition & trust myself more.”
- “I want to stop repeating the same relationship pattern.”
- “I want to make a change, but I don’t know what’s blocking me.”
- “I want to learn how to honor my energy, boundaries & capacity.”
A clear intention gives the work a place to begin.
Don’t Expect Your Tarot Coach to Be Psychic
This is important: please do not assume your tarot coach is psychic.
Some tarot readers & tarot coaches may identify as psychic. Many do not. And even when someone has intuitive or psychic gifts, tarot coaching is not about making the practitioner guess who you are, what you need or why you are there.
Tarot is less about proving psychic ability & more about intuitive connection, symbolism, reflection, pattern recognition & meaning-making.
Your tarot coach will be able to support you more effectively when you share relevant context.
- Tell them what is happening.
- Tell them what you have tried.
- Tell them what feels stuck.
- Tell them what hurts.
- Tell them what you are hoping to change.
- Tell them what feels confusing, tender or important.
That information is not “cheating.”
It is collaboration.
In tarot coaching, the cards are not used to remove your responsibility or predict a fixed future. They are used as reflective tools that help you gain insight, stimulate thought, connect with intuition & inspire aligned action.
The more honest & present you are, the deeper the work can go.
Choose a Tarot Coach You Like & Trust
You need to trust your tarot coach.
If you do not trust them, it will be difficult to talk about serious, personal or challenging topics. And if you do not like their energy, style or approach, the process may not feel as supportive or effective as it could.
Trust does not mean the coach tells you only what you want to hear.
Trust means they are respectful, clear, ethical, compassionate & grounded. It means they honor your boundaries. It means they explain their process. It means they help you feel more connected to yourself instead of more dependent on them.
Liking your tarot coach matters, too.
You are choosing someone to sit with you in a transformational process. Their voice, energy, personality, values & style should feel compatible with the kind of support you need.
Set a Clear Intention
Tarot coaching works best when you are not coming from a vague need to know the future or control the uncontrollable.
Instead, begin by asking:
- Where do I need clarity?
- Where do I feel stuck?
- What is no longer working?
- What do I want to understand?
- What do I want to change?
- What do I want to feel, practice or embody differently?
Your intention can be a statement or a question.
For example:
- “I want to rebuild trust with myself.”
- “I want to understand and release the pattern of over-giving.”
- “I want to create a more compassionate relationship with my body.”
- “I want to learn how to honor my sensitivity instead of fighting it.”
Or:
- “What do I need to know to build a healthier relationship?”
- “What is asking to change in my relationship with rest & capacity?”
- “How can I stop abandoning myself when other people are disappointed?”
- “What support do I need to move through this transition with more self-trust?”
A strong intention focuses the work.
It does not control the outcome.
That distinction matters.
Prepare Your Space
If your tarot coaching sessions happen over video or phone, create a space that supports the work.
Choose a place where you can have privacy. A room with a door is ideal. If you live with other people, let them know you will need uninterrupted time. Silence notifications. Put away distractions. Have water, tissues, a notebook, a pen or anything else that helps you feel supported.
Then consider what helps you feel present, connected & relaxed.
For me, that may include crystals, music, candles, incense & softened lighting.
For you, it might be a blanket, tea, a favorite chair, grounding stones, a quiet altar, dim lights or simply a clear surface & a deep breath.
Your space does not need to be elaborate.
It only needs to help you arrive.
Presence helps you stay with the process.
Connection helps you access your intuition.
Relaxation helps your body soften enough to receive.
For Highly Sensitive People, Empaths & people with chronic illnesses, preparing your space can be especially important. Your nervous system, energy & body deserve a container that makes the work feel more accessible.
Prepare Yourself
After preparing your space, prepare yourself.
This might include a mindfulness practice before your session. You could try a breathing exercise, guided meditation, body scan, prayer, grounding practice, gentle stretching or another technique that helps you arrive in the present moment.
If you do not already have a mindfulness practice, experiment before your first session. Try a few different techniques & notice which ones actually help you feel grounded.
Then, practice welcoming the unknown.
Tarot coaching may bring forward insights, possibilities, feelings or truths you did not expect. Some may feel affirming. Some may feel uncomfortable. Some may take time to understand.
An open mind & heart help you receive what is useful, even when it is not what you expected.
This does not mean you should accept everything without question.
It means you stay curious.
Release Assumptions & Expectations
Tarot coaching can reveal truths you may not have been ready to see.
It can also show you things about yourself, your life, your choices or your patterns that challenge your assumptions.
That is part of the work.
The answers you receive may not be the answers you wanted.
They may not even be answers you like at first.
But growth often begins with truth & exploration. If you enter the process determined to hear only one thing, you may miss the insight that could actually help you.
Try to let go of the need for the session to go a certain way.
Let go of the idea that the cards must confirm your preferred outcome.
Let go of the need to be “right.”
Let go of the pressure to have everything figured out.
Tarot coaching is not about feeding your ego, fear or anxiety.
It is about helping you see more clearly, choose more consciously & move toward what is true.
Ask Questions Before You Begin
Before your first session, address any concerns you have.
Ask about the tarot coach’s process, policies, boundaries, session structure, communication expectations, follow-up rules, recordings, confidentiality, homework & what is or is not included.
You might ask:
- How do tarot & coaching work together in your sessions?
- What should I bring to each session?
- Do you record sessions?
- Will there be homework between sessions?
- How do you handle questions after a session?
- What happens if something does not resonate?
- What is outside your scope?
- How do you support clients who are sensitive, empathic or chronically ill?
Write your questions down so you do not forget them.
You cannot receive an answer to a question you never asked.
A good tarot coach will welcome thoughtful questions before the work begins.
During Your Tarot Coaching Sessions
During your sessions, aim to be present, receptive & engaged.
Presence keeps you in the moment instead of spinning into judgment, distraction or old stories.
Receptivity helps you stay open to possibilities, new perspectives & deeper insight.
Engagement means you are actively participating rather than simply watching the process unfold.
This matters because tarot coaching is co-created.
Your tarot coach may guide the process, but your honesty, reflections, questions, intuition & choices are part of the work.
Without your engagement, you become a witness.
By engaging, you become a participant in your transformation.
Practice Active Listening
Active listening helps you stay connected to your tarot coach, the cards, the process & yourself.
Listen to what your coach says.
Also, listen to what you say.
Sometimes your own words will reveal the truth before your mind fully catches up. You may hear yourself name a pattern, desire, fear or need you did not realize was so present.
Also, notice what you do not say.
What do you avoid?
Where do you hesitate?
What feels hard to admit?
What do you keep circling without naming?
Those places often hold important information.
Active listening is not only about hearing your coach.
It is also about hearing yourself.
Be Honest with Your Tarot Coach & Yourself
Honesty is essential in tarot coaching.
You do not have to share anything you are not ready to share. You always have the right to your boundaries.
But the work can only go as deep as your honesty allows.
If something is relevant, say so.
If something feels tender, name that.
If something does not resonate, say that too.
If you realize you have been avoiding a truth, bring it into the room.
Being honest with your tarot coach matters.
Being honest with yourself matters even more.
This can be challenging. Sometimes it can feel frightening. But transformation asks for truth.
Not perfection.
Truth.
Record or Take Notes
Tarot coaching sessions can contain a lot of insight.
If your tarot coach does not record sessions for you, consider asking whether you may record them yourself. Always get consent before recording.
If recording is not an option, take detailed notes.
Revisiting your sessions can be incredibly helpful. You may hear something differently later. You may notice a theme you missed. You may understand a message more clearly once time has passed & life has given you context.
Recordings, notes & transcripts help you continue working with the session after it ends.
Speak Up When Something Is Unclear
If something feels confusing, unclear or incomplete, ask for clarification.
If a message does not resonate, say so.
A tarot coach should be able to explore the insight with you, ask a different question, clarify their interpretation or help you understand how it might connect to your life.
You might say:
- “I’m not sure I understand that.”
- “That doesn’t quite resonate yet.”
- “Can we look at that another way?”
- “What might that mean in practical terms?”
- “I feel something around that card, but I don’t know what.”
Open-ended questions are especially useful.
They invite deeper insight rather than shutting down the conversation.
Again: you cannot get an answer to a question you do not ask.
Trust Your Intuition
Your intuition is part of the tarot coaching process.
Notice what lights up, tightens, softens, resists or repeats inside you. Notice what your body does when a card appears or when your coach reflects something back to you.
Your intuition may not always speak loudly.
Sometimes it whispers.
Sometimes it arrives as a body sensation.
Sometimes it feels like recognition.
Sometimes it feels like discomfort because a truth is close.
Sometimes it feels like a quiet, steady “yes” or “no.”
The goal is not to force intuition.
The goal is to build a relationship with it.
Tarot coaching can help you practice that relationship in real time.
Between Sessions
Most of the work happens between sessions.
This is where you process what came up. This is where you complete integration exercises. This is where you journal, reflect, practice new tools, take aligned action & notice how the work shows up in your actual life.
Do not skip this part.
The session may open the door, but the work between sessions helps you walk through it.
Your tarot coach may give you homework, journaling prompts, rituals, exercises, reflection questions, embodiment practices or small aligned actions.
Do them as honestly as you can.
If something feels inaccessible because of energy, symptoms, overwhelm or life circumstances, communicate that. Especially for chronically ill and sensitive clients, integration work should support transformation without ignoring capacity.
The work matters.
So does the way you approach it.
Let the Work Percolate
Not every insight will make sense immediately.
Some messages need time.
A card may not resonate during the session, but three days later, something happens & the meaning becomes clear. A question may bother you because it touched something real. A pattern may only become obvious after you notice it playing out in daily life.
Give the work room to breathe.
Reflect on whether something feels true, partially true, not true or not yet clear.
If something still does not resonate, bring it back to your tarot coach. There may be a misunderstanding, a timing issue or a block that needs gentler exploration.
Stay curious.
Curiosity opens more doors than defensiveness.
After the Program or Package Ends
When your tarot coaching package ends, the work continues in a different way.
You may want to revisit your recordings or notes multiple times. You may want to journal about what shifted, what surprised you, what challenged you & what still feels alive.
You might reflect on:
- What did I learn about myself?
- What patterns became clearer?
- What changed in my relationship with my body, energy or intuition?
- What boundaries did I practice?
- What actions felt aligned?
- What still needs support?
- What am I proud of?
- What do I want to continue?
Tarot coaching is not only about what happens inside the sessions.
It is about how you carry the work forward.
Watch for Themes in Your Life
After your sessions or program ends, pay attention to the themes that keep appearing.
Notice what repeats in your relationships, work, body, emotions, energy, intuition & choices.
Ask:
- How does this insight apply to my life now?
- What can I actually control here?
- What choice is mine to make?
- What behavior might need to change?
- What support do I need?
- What am I ready to stop carrying?
- What do I need to let go of because it is not mine to control?
A powerful part of tarot coaching is learning the difference between what you can influence & what you cannot.
Your choices & behavior are yours.
Other people’s reactions, beliefs & decisions are not.
Learning that difference can save you enormous amounts of energy.
Prepared Tarot Coaching Goes Deeper
There should always be room for flexibility, intuition & personalization in tarot coaching.
The process should respond to you as a real person, not force you through a rigid formula.
But preparation still matters.
When you arrive with a clear intention, choose a coach you trust, prepare your space, stay honest, participate actively, ask questions, complete the integration work & reflect afterward, you give tarot coaching the conditions it needs to become transformational.
You do not have to do it perfectly.
You only need to show up honestly.
